These trips are being run for 2 projects this year. The first is to help raise funds for the United Railroad Historical Societies effort to return a very historic passenger car to New Jersey. The car is a gasoline-electric “Doodlebug” motorcar, was built for the Erie Railroad in March 1931 and is numbered 5012. The “Doodlebug” had a short-lived working career and was retired after only 20 years in June of 1951.  The second is to continue to raise funds to restore and preserve the historic NYS&W Hawthorne train station. This little train station has been sitting on the corner of Diamond Bridge and Royal Avenues in Hawthorne for over 100 years It is a fixture in the middle of town and is one of the stations the 5012 stopped at, when it spent a few years on the NYS&W. In addition the VRA will use the funds to continue to support the effort to create a New Jersey State Transportation Museum and Heritage Center. So while you are enjoying a great day out on the rails with the kids you will also be helping to preserve New Jersey’s rich transportation for generations to come.

So why not gather up the kids and Grandparents and join the VRA, Santa and his friends on these fun train rides. Tickets for the trains usually sell out quickly so don’t delay call or visit them on-line today. The VRA staffs their ticket office on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 10 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 pm all other times just leave a message for a return call.

The Volunteer Railroaders Association is a federally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.

The trains will run out of the NJ Transit Mountain View (Wayne) train station on December 1st and NJ Transit Glen Rock train station on December 2nd. The December 1st trip is being run for the United Railroad Historical Society and its effort to bring the Erie 5012 back to NJ. The December 2nd trip is VRA’s and is being run as a fund raiser for the Hawthorne station and other VRA projects, like the L&NE motorcar. Tentative times of the trains should be in the 10 am hour, 12 noon hour and 2 pm hour.

Hawthorne train station:

The December 2nd trip is being run to help raise funds to restore, preserve and move the historic NYS&W Hawthorne train station. This little train station has been sitting on the corner of Diamond Bridge and Royal Avenues in Hawthorne for over 100 years and is a fixture in the middle of town. Over the last 20 years, as trucks got higher, the buildings roof has been hit many times and it is beginning to take its toll. The VRA hopes to move the building about 50 feet north, away from the corner and away from the turning trucks. As an added benefit this move will open up the corner for better visibility for pedestrians and motor vehicles alike. After the move is made the VRA is planning to turn the area where the station once stood into a public plaza complete with benches, flowers, shrubs and maybe even a garden railroad.
